George Phineas Gordon, from New York, was a master printer and innovator of the mid-1800s. He, like many small business printers of the time, was frustrated with the work required to print stationary on the hand presses dominating the industry. In turn, Gordon began to construct his own press. He settled on his model in 1857, and the “Gordon Jobber” quickly made Gordon a millionaire. But by 1883, his patent expired, and other companies started using his design. Our press was manufactured in 1897 by The Challenge Machinery Company, attaching Gordon’s name to bank on his popularity.
